Julia Phillips was born and raised in Hamburg and is the citizen of Germany and the US. Phillips studied Visual Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Hamburg (HFBK), and lived in Berlin for 1.5 years before moving to New York to attend Columbia's MFA Program. After graduating in 2015, she attended the Whitney Program, followed by a residency at Skowhegan, and finally a year-long residency at The Studio Museum in Harlem from 2016-17, directly followed by a 1-month residency at Denniston Hill in upstate New York.

Julia Phillips works primarily with ceramics and metal, creating sculptures reminiscent of functional objects that relate to the human body. She also works on paper and with video. Phillips describes her intellectual interests to be framed by psycho-analytical Black feminist thought and Biraciality.

She has shown her work in Europe and the US, in cities, such as Berlin, London, Vienna, Warsaw, Los Angeles and New York. Her most recent shows were a group show curated by the Whitney Program's curatorial fellows at The Kitchen, 'Dreamers Awake' - a group show on women artists and Surrealism at White Cube London, and the Artist-in-Residency show ‘We Go As They’ at The Studio Museum in Harlem, which will be on view until early January 2018.
