Jürgen Kirner studied Visual Communication design and stage design in Kassel, Hamburg and Berlin and worked as assistant to Florian Etti, Heinz Hauser and Robert Wilson.
Since 2001 he produced numerous designs for theatre, opera, performance and dance.
His work brought him to the Düsseldorf Theatre amongst others, such as Stadshouwburg Antwer, the Bavarian State Opera Munich, the Opera  Halle, City Theater Heidelberg and Baden State Theatre Karlsruhe,  the State Theater Salzburg and Linz, the City Theatre St. Gallen and Berne and the Summer Festival in Montpellier.
 
He designed the set and costumes of the opera Medusa for opera director Aron Stiehl that premiered at the Bavarian State Opera. This collaboration continued in the operas Brother of Sleep, Fidelio, Lady Macbeth of the Mzensk, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, Il Mondo della Luna, Madame Butterfly, La Bohème, The Marriage of Figaro, Pagliacci, Bluebeard, The Bat, Frau Luna, The Flying Dutchmen, etc.
He joined Zubin Mehta and the Israelic Philharmonic Orchestra in the production of Abduction from the Seraglio in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and he worked with the Leipzig Opera  to produce Wagner’s The Ban on Love for the Bayreuth Festival.
With directors Peter Lund and Bernd Mottl he collaborated on several musical theater productions in the Neukölln Opera and at the Theater Erfurt and Staatstheater Cottbus. Tosca was produced for The House for Mozart Salzburg with the Brazilian director Andre Heller-Lopez. For Pascale Chevroton he designed the sets of the musicals My Fair Lady, Sweet Charity, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jekyll and Hyde, Man of La Mancha and a Merry Widow. This is followed by Il Prigioniero and Suor Angelica.
  
His big love is dance.
For the Kevin O’Day Ballet of the National Theatre Mannheim he designed the sets for Moving Mozart, Topographical layer, dance / sound / power, Delta blues, his last three-part ballet performances Beethoven and Three-to-one and Casanova.
Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, a dance evening involving disabled artists choreographed by Alessio Trevisani was staged at Theater Thikwa Berlin. Street art performance projects followed Forough Farrokhzad with the Dance Theatre Leipzig.
With the Stuttgart Ballet and the productions Letters of Others and Bass Concerto he started a close collaboration with the choreographer Bridget Breiner. With her he created for the interdisciplinary Bigtowntriptych, a combination of Opera Zeus and Elida, Life at this Time and the Mahagonny Songplay, at Musictheater in the Destrict(MIR).
This was followed by set and costume design for the Ballett im Revier for First Step and Russ, which won the German Theatre Prize Faust 2013.
 
As a freelance stage and costume designer he lives and works in Berlin.
