Together with our partners at the Toronto Outdor Picture Show, we are celebrating Pride with the queer punk-rock opera Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Amore is in the air for our presentation of Groundhog Day-style romcom Hello Again at the Distillery District as part of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, co-presented with our friends at the German Consulate Toronto. And finally, we’re back at TOPS with a bang with Bob Fosse’s dazzling Cabaret starring Liza Minelli, the role which landed her an Oscar.

From the heart of East Berlin at the end of the Cold War to a series of chain seafood restaurants in middle America, Mitchell’s punk rock opera Hedwig and the Angry Inch takes us on a musical journey through queer love, loss, and celebrity. Mitchell plays the titular Hedwig, a genderqueer musician forced to make a living by playing bars after her ex steals her songs and becomes a huge star. Another formally innovative entry into the canon of New Queer Cinema, Hedwig is as much a rollicking musical – try not to hum “Wig in a Box” as you walk home – as it is a poignant meditation on trying to find love and acceptance in a world hostile to your very existence.

If you got to relive the same day over and over again, what would you do differently? Zazie is a young, single woman living in a small apartment with her two wacky roommates. None of them are interested in finding love; they simply enjoy their fun and free lifestyle. When Zazie receives an invitation to her childhood best friend’s wedding, everything changes. Believing that the woman he is supposed to marry is completely wrong for him, Zazie tries her best to put an end to the festivities. Then something strange starts to happen that forces Zazie to look more closely at her own life.

Liza Minnelli earned an Oscar for one of cinema’s most magnetic performances as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, celebrating its 50th anniversary year. Directed by famed choreographer Bob Fosse, this quintessential modern musical masterpiece about Berlin’s vibrant 1930s performing arts scene against the backdrop of rising Nazism still feels uncomfortably relevant
.
This screening takes place on the anniversary weekend of Christie Pits Park’s 1933 race riots, the site of a neighbourhood-wide battle which saw Jewish and Italian immigrants fight fascist sympathizers who displayed a swastika at a baseball game in the park.
