Monsters & Tricksters

a talk by Bernd Scherer

The Speculative Life Cluster is pleased to invite you to Dr. Bernd Scherer’s talk: ‘Art in the Time of Tricksters and Monsters’ to be held at Milieux this upcoming Friday, January 13th.

In the pre-modern world monsters belonged to a counter-world, which allowed to negotiate the problems of the real world in an imaginative space. Tricksters navigated between these worlds. The space was protected as a sacred space.

The paper will show that the project of western modernity can be understood as a project where the monsters are produced in the real world. If this is the case, the question arises what happens to the counter-worlds and to the imaginary spaces? And if art took over to some extent the sacred space of religion as has been argued, what role is left for it?

Bernd M. Scherer is Director of Haus der Kulturen der Welt since 2006. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken. Philosopher and author of several publications focusing on aesthetics and international cultural exchange, Scherer came to the HKW from the Goethe-Institut. Since January 2011, he teaches as Honorary Professor at the Institute for European Ethnology, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
