In her timely dystopian satire, director Natalia Sinelnikova delivers a piercing critique of our irrational fear of difference and how it frays the fabric of civilized society. Security guard Anna and her daughter Iris are Jewish immigrants living in a gated community in Germany. The disappearance of a dog coupled with Iris’s belief that she is afflicted with the evil eye prompts a wave of paranoia within the community. Visually bold cinematography underscores the mounting terror that fuels the community’s disintegration while reminding us of the threat that conspiracy theories pose.
