Extraordinary times call for extraordinary action
Goethe-Institut Toronto is excited to co-present the event Climate Cocoon, a global, collaborative live jjournalism show bringing together stories of #climate survival from local spaces across the globe. In this show, storytellers from live journalism organizations will each share a story; collectively, these will be stitched together to form a tapestry of climate crisis events and individual and community responses to them.
Our guest from Germany is Daniel Robbel, a journalist and author who found himself at the centre of the devastating floods that hit the Ahr valley in Western Germany in July 2021.
Together with his Dutch colleagues, Danielle Arets and Thijs van den Houdt, he will relive those two days in July which left 135 people dead and many without their homes. Reconstruction efforts continue until today. His piece ties his memory and experience to the practice of reporting on one’s own community.

Short bio - Daniel Robbel
Daniel Robbel is a German journalist and author. He works as deputy editor-in-chief for the weekly newspaper BLICK aktuell, based in the Ahr valley in the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, where he predominantly covers politics. Prior to this, he worked as a reporter at a daily newspaper. Daniel is also the author of several non-fiction books, including travel guides and storybooks.
As a resident of the Ahr valley, Daniel was at the centre of the devastating floods that hit the region on 14 and 15 July 2021. While ensuring that his friends and family were unharmed, he presented the news in a clear and balanced way as the disaster unfolded.
