Internationally renowned street artist Justus Becker will be in Toronto in September to realize a site-specific work at 20 Charles Street East. He will engage with the community of local artists and students. Toronto artist Alexander Lazich will be Justus’ Toronto Knowledge Exchange Partner on this project. In 2020, he will create an artwork in Frankfurt.

Justus Becker aka COR discovered the nocturnal graffiti world, which held him under its spell at a young age. As a rebellious teenager, he was wanted for his illegal graffiti by the police, who arrested him several times. Despite these difficulties, he soon became the best sprayer in the Frankfurt area. Companies began to offer him commissioned project work, especially for his photo-realistic faces, which became his trademark. His artistic works, in which he alienates photo-realism with abstract colours and shapes, allow him to create mysterious portraits patched inside a different world – compositions between aesthetics and the wild vitality of art. Even though COR already had appearances in single and group exhibitions throughout Germany and the world, his main gallery remains the street: the creation of big and spectacular murals (graffiti), for which he set new standards.

Toronto's partnership with Frankfurt a.M. was formalized contemporaneous with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and is celebrating its 30th anniversary with this Mural Exchange and the Toronto visit of Frankfurt Mayor Peter Feldmann. Frankfurt is the historic German and European financial centre and home to the headquarters of the European Central Bank.

StART is a suite of innovative programs by the City of Toronto designed specifically for streets and public spaces. Initiated in 2012 as an integral part of the City of Toronto's Graffiti Management Plan, StART has been successful in placing vibrant, colourful, community-engaged street art in Toronto.
