New Monuments Task Force
New Monuments Task Force is a fantastical municipal agency based in San Francisco that rethinks, questions, and addresses the city’s monuments. The task force was founded by Cheyenne Concepcion, an artist and designer whose projects address questions around land development, migration, and cultural memory. The task force launched the Relic Report, a two-part unofficial “official municipal study” that assesses how the city’s monument landscape intersects with histories of race, gender, colonialism, and capital.
Relic Report, which “broadens public understanding of local monuments and advises relative civic agencies on the removal, redesign, or retention of San Francisco’s statuary symbols,” classified monuments into six inventive yet candid categories: The Boys Club, Original Gentrifiers (OGs), Modern-ish, War and Peace, Artists and Idealists, and What Remains.
