November 2017

LIFT PIX Film Studio Immersion Program

Supported by the Goethe-Institut

Focusing on the media history of urban and natural landscapes, and investigating the social-political and historical relevance of everyday situations, audio-visual artist Andreas Wutz’s concepts relate to historical and contemporary time. He will be in residence at Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) for the month of November.

Wutz will be working on a new project called 80 seconds in Toronto, a mixed media installation (16mm film, 35mm slides, text footage, field recordings and hand-made optical sound). He explores local districts in Toronto's West End at night-time to combine or contrast the images with specific sounds recorded in that neighbourhood, or with sounds that result from exposing found objects or site-specific patterns and structures onto an optical sound track. Eventually, all recordings and footage will result in a 2-screen 16mm film loop installation and a 35mm single-slide projection. The project title refers to the photo-based film 1 second in Montreal by Michael Snow. At the same it alludes to the fact that the cyclic rhythm of a carousel slide projector is defined by 80 slides.
