Portraying Dubbing Actors

Goethe-Institut Toronto

Presented by the Goethe-Institut Toronto
Canadian Premiere

“Faces behind the Voices” highlights a profession in the film industry that often goes unrecognized: dubbing actors. After intensive research, Berlin-based photographer Marco Justus Schöler portrayed Germany’s most familiar voices. The Goethe Media Space will display two of them, combining large-format photographs with German audio samples and background material on roles and careers. Claudia Urbschat-Mingues is the German voice of Angelina Jolie, Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Connelly and many others; Tobias Meister covers Kiefer Sutherland, Forest Whitaker, Brad Pitt, Jack Black, and Sean Penn.

Born in Mannheim in 1990, Marco Justus Schöler moved to Berlin in 2011 and started working as a photographer. The idea of "Faces behind the Voices" came to him while watching "Shutter Island," wondering what Leonardo DiCaprio's German voice might look like. He was surprised to encounter a lot of hurdles when he first started his research, learning that many dubbing actors chose their job not to be in the spotlight.

Claudia Urbschat-Mingues' voice is her (unique) selling point today after long having been her biggest problem. As a teenager she dreamed of becoming a singer but couldn't find a teacher who wanted to deal with her problematic vocal cords. After a speech therapist confirmed that her voice was broken and assured her that she could still work with it, she obtained a degree from drama school and soon started a career in dubbing.

Growing up in Cologne and Berlin, Tobias Meister became an actor like both his parents. He played in several TV and film productions but is most successful in dubbing. In 2008, he won the German Dubbing Award for the role of Forest Whitaker in "The Last King of Scotland." Over the last years, Meister has also worked as a dubbing director.
