German films @ Hot Docs
The Goethe-Institut supports German initiatives at North America's biggest documentary film festival
As every year, the Goethe-Institut Toronto is happy to partner with Hot Docs in presenting the innovative German documentary scene, represented this year through 19 films and co-productions.
As a guest of the Goethe-Institut, Christoph Terhechte, head of the Berlinale Forum program, will be part of this year’s Hot Docs jury.
Also, the Goethe-Institut is co-presenting Global Family, a film by Andreas Köhler and Melanie Andernach, which will be part of the Hot Docs program "The Changing Face of Europe". Telling the migration drama of a Somali family with an intimate and compassionate approach, the film won the Max Ophüls Award for Best Documentary and ties in with the Goethe-Institut’s focus on “Culture(s) of Participation” (see our Writing On reading series).
Covering the same topic through a different lens, Philip Scheffner’s documentary film installation Havarie at the Goethe Media Space, is also part of the official Hot Docs 2018 selection. The film, which premiered at Berlinale Forum in 2016 and has won the German Film Critics Award 2017, is shown as a Toronto premiere. As a contextualizing event, Christoph Terhechte will be at the Goethe-Institut for a talk on Havarie on May 3rd.
Hot Docs Film Festival is the largest North American documentary film festival with more than 200,000 visitors and 200 films from around the world.
