Whether in the Cannes hit comedy “Toni Erdmann” or the exorcism drama “Requiem”, the prolific Sandra Hüller (who was just named German "Actress of the Year") commands the screen, winning 3x best actress at the Berlinale, a European Film Award & the Toronto Film Critics Association Award. At TIFF19 she shone in the French productions “Proxima” & “Sibyl”. GOETHE FILMS honors the versatile artist with a mid-career retrospective of many of her best features, including the Canadian premiere of Sundance and Berlinale 2020 hit “Exile” and Toronto premieres of “In the Aisles” & “Finsterworld” plus shorts, some known, some discoveries.

Sandra Hüller (born in 1978) discovered her passion for acting at a very early age. As a child she joined the theatre group of her East German school and took part in acting workshops. After graduating, she followed her dream and went to Berlin to study acting at the Ernst Bush Academy of Dramatic Arts. Hüller soon became a celebrated theatre actress, named Best Newcomer Actress by Theater Heute magazine in 2003. A decade later, Hüller was voted Theatre Actress of the Year in a critics survey. On stage, she often plays strong women, such as the widow of Nirvana’s front singer Kurt Cobain in Tom Schneider's play “For Love” (2009), Queen Elizabeth I in “Virgin Queen” (2009) at Volksbühne Berlin, or her most celebrated and current role as Hamlet at Schauspielhaus Bochum.
Inhabiting both worlds, the stage and the screen, comes naturally to Hüller. After several short films, she had her cinematic breakthrough in Hans-Christian Schmid’s feature “Requiem” (2006). For her performance as Michaela Klingler, a woman suffering from epilepsy, she won the Berlinale Silver Bear for Best Actress. 10 years later, she gained international recognition when she played the lead role in Maren Ade’s tragicomedy “Toni Erdmann” (2016), which premiered at Cannes and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. In 2017, Hüller reached another milestone in her career: She was accepted into the Academy of Arts in Berlin, comparable to a knightly accolade for artists. After attending the Berlinale as a nominee or guest for years, she was a member of the jury in 2019 alongside Juliette Binoche.
Admired for her quiet, nuanced portraits of damaged but resilient women, she also shows off her comedic talent, as in German culture clash smash hit “Fack Ju Göhte 3” (2017) or as the cunning fox in “Pinocchio” (2013) with Mario Adorf.
