Erika Mann beschreibt typische Milieus und Schicksale aus dem gleichgeschalteten Deutschland. In ihren Geschichten wird von Anpassung und Leid, Resignation und Versagen, aber auch von Mut und Menschlichkeit berichtet. Zumeist geschieht nichts Spektakuläres, doch die Not und Unzufriedenheit der Menschen sind offenkundig. Und über allem schwebt die eine große Hoffnung: dass es möglichst bald vorbei ist und die Lichter wieder angehen in Deutschland.
