Goethe-Institut Montreal

The Goethe-Institut inaugurates specially commissioned works for Nuit blanche 2018 !

The Goethe-Institut, in collaboration with the Quartier des spectacles Partnership, is proud to present two works by the inventive research and design studio from Berlin: The Constitute.

After presenting their work in many international settings, from Germany, France, the US and China, The Constitute, known for such innovative works as Human Beeing and EYEsect, comes to Montreal for their first visit to Canada. The Constitute has created two original works for the Goethe-Institut, one, Zeit-Slice, to be experienced outside by way of an interactive window projection connecting the cities of Berlin and Montreal, and the other,  a special VR experience of selected Berlin-neighbourhoods which awaits the public inside only on Nuit blanche.

3 essential Berlin films

In three films, we will be presenting a picture of Berlin throughout the years

  • 8:15 pm: B-Movie (Jörg A.Hoppe, Klaus Maeck & Heiko Lange, 2015): Music, art and chaos in the wild West Berlin of the 1980s: the walled-in city became the creative melting pot for sub- and pop culture in all its forms. Before the Wall fell, everything and anything seemed possible. Watch the trailer.
  • 10 pm: Sonnenallee (Leander Haußmann, 1998/99): In his cinematic debut, former theatre director Leander Haussmann attempts to capture the prevailing mood of 1970s East Berlin.  17-year-old Micha Ehrenreich lives with his parents and sister on the divided street Sonnenallee. Watch the trailer.
  • 11:30 pm: Berlin, Symphony of a Great City (Walther Ruttmann, 1927): This landmark, silent film, showing us a collage of sights and sounds from a day in Berlin in 1927, has become a precious historical document of archival footage.
