Silver Bear, Best Director, Berlinale 2019

Considered a member of the Berlin School, Angela Schanelec’s latest film premiered at the 2019 Berlinale where it won best director award, and typical for her films, divided both the public and critics alike. Having disappeared for a week, Astrid’s 13-year-old son Phillip returns home without saying a word. Both his mother and teachers suspect his disappearance may be related to the loss of his father. As life gradually returns to normal, Astrid finds herself confronted with a new perspective on her existence, her career and ideas on art.

“There was booing at the screening – although German director Angela Schanelec delivered the most beautiful and artistic film of the competition. (…) What cinema can do, and what she can do with cinema, is shown right at the start (…) with its incomparable precision.” – Der Spiegel

“The mise en scène was captivating by its rhythm, understatement and framing which reveal with each scene a hidden harmony, an ephemeral grace and a troubling strangeness at the heart of banality.” – Libération.
“This is what I was at Home, but… is about: how to stage something; what the discussion of authenticity should be. Film is – like theatre – obviously a staging (…).  – Die Zeit
