A cooperation of the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) in Toronto: The Alliance Française, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Instituto Camões and the Goethe-Institut.
At the next meeting of the European Book Club, we will be discussing Saša Stanišić's
"Before the Feast."
Copies of the book can be ordered online or ask at your local bookstore. We also carry English and German copies in our library.
"Before the Feast" takes place in a fictitious German small town. Here it seems that time has stopped. The inhabitants are strange, each stranger than the next – there is the former postman, who is now raising chickens, a man called "Lada", who every now and then, sinks his car in the lake for fun. Then there is Frau Schwermuth, the melancholic village-historian and the ferryman. But the ferryman is dead, having died the night before the festival, when many odd things happen…
"Before the Feast" is the second novel by author Saša Stanišić, who is originally from Bosnia. In 2006, he released his debut novel,"How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone", which was translated into thirty languages.
Moderator
Philipp Schnaase was born in Rostock and studied Philosophy and Social Sciences in Rostock, Münster and Montreal, where he received his MA in Philosophy. He is a regular host for the Deutscher Filmklub at the Goethe-Institut and a library assistant for the Toronto Symphony.
EUNIC the network of the European cultural relations institutes in Toronto is formed by Alliance Française, British Council, Camões Toronto, Italian Cultural Institute and Goethe-Institute Torontoand exists since 2010.
The European Book Club meets periodically to discuss a European contemporary book translated into English in the different cultural institute.
