Three new outstanding German environmental films

The Goethe-Institut is proud to co-present the selection of three new outstanding German environmental films during the 17th Annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival.

Planet in Focus operates year-round producing Canada’s largest environmental film festival every fall in Toronto. It attracts thousands of film lovers from all over the world every year. The 2016 line-up includes 26 features and 27 shorts from every corner of the planet, out of which there will be 10 world premieres, 12 North American premieres, 11 Canadian premieres and 13 Toronto debuts.

Program:

 - Saturday October 22, 1 PM, Innis Town Hall
10 Billion: What's on your plate? Directed by Valentin Thurn, 102 min
Within the 21st century, the global population will surpass 10 billion, a figure that current methods of agricultural production cannot hope to sustain. Filmmaker Valentin Thurn travels the world in search of innovative solutions in the absorbing glimpse at the future of sustainable food.
The Screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

- Sunday, October 23, 1:30PM, Innis Town Hall
Coal India Directed by Felix Roben, Ajay Koli, 45 min
This beguiling film essay surveys India's Kusunda coalfields where, in contrast to sunny Bollywood-style corporate promotional videos, the landscape is ashen and gangs of young pirates make their livings by plundering coal from passing transports.

- Sunday, October 23, 12 PM, AGO Jackman Hall
Magical Moors Directed by Jan Haft, 93 min
Beautifully shot and edited, with a brilliant narration by Russel Boulton, this evocative film captures the imagination while offering scientific accounts of the birds, insects and mammals that inhabit the landscape. Lyrical yet analytical, the film shows how the moors are in decline and that their destruction causes carbon emission which in turn have a larger impact on the planet.
