Do you remember when you were fifteen? The film Prinzessinnenbad (Pool of Princesses) might take you back to that thrilling and confusing time. German filmmaker Bettina Blümner follows three teenage girls in this documentary: Klara, Mina and Tanutscha. All three of them are from Kreuzberg in Berlin, each with her own set of problems. Klara has had several run-ins with the law and flirts with men far too old for her. Mina, on the other hand, is in a committed relationship with a boy her age. This relationship is slowly consuming her and causing her to withdraw form many important aspects of her life. And there is also Tanutscha, an angst-ridden girl with family problems.

The trio have known each other since kindergarten and are the best of friends. They have a lot in common and spend their free time at the Prinzenbad, a large open-air swimming pool at the very heart of the district they have grown up in. They are all convinced that they are grown up and that they have left childhood behind. It was at the Prinzenbad, where Bettina Blümer met the girls and came up with the idea for the documentary.

Prinzessinenbad is a youthful movie. Fast-paced, direct and honest. Bettina Blümner has produced a movie that shows the everyday reality of teenagers stuck between their insecurities about the future and the process towards self-realization.

The documentary was granted the “Dialoige en perspective” prize at the Berlinale 2007.

The film will be shown in German with English subtitles. Afterwards there will be a moderated discussion in German.
