Goethe-Institut Toronto

The Goethe-Institut is delighted to be part of Doors Open Toronto to showcase its various programs and events in the areas of culture, language and information as the hub for contemporary German culture in the city and beyond.

This year’s theme of Doors Open Toronto, “Film: The Great Romance” explores the city’s film and television industry. With more than 1,400 on-location film, television and digital media productions taking place in the city each year, Toronto is North America’s third largest screen-based production centre and the heart of Canada’s film and television sector. The Doors Open Toronto program features historic cinemas, film and television studios, post-production houses, digital media studios, artist-run centres and film training schools.

Film has long been a major focus of the Goethe-Institut Toronto: from our popular GOETHE FILMS series at the TIFF Bell Lightbox to our Deutscher Filmklub which presents German film favourites in an informal setting followed by discussion in German; the European Union Film Festival, which the Goethe-Institut founded in 2005; and our many co-presentations at film festivals throughout the year, we are proud to be an integral part of the Toronto film scene.

For Doors Open Toronto, we look forward to inviting you to experience new cinematic trends in the Goethe Media Space. You will also have the opportunity to walk (or dance) in and out of a screening of German music videos by Radiohead, alva noto, Mouse on Mars and many others (10am - 2pm), or take a quick "trip" to Berlin with “Shorts in Berlin: 8 Award-Winning Films about the German Capital” (2 - 5pm).

Visitors are welcome to explore our extensive library to learn about our German and English language holdings, and to learn about the cultural work of Goethe-Institut. There will be two library tours at 11am and 1pm and visitors will be able to play German board games and win prizes by spinning a trivia wheel of fortune.

Do you want to learn a new language? Then join one of our interactive language classes, which will be offered every hour from 10:30am - 3:30pm! These classes provide guests with basic communication skills through games, songs and state-of-the-art technology and are a great opportunity to discover how fun learning - and speaking - German can be.
