German “Krautrock” pioneers & present-day avant-provocateurs

Presented by Wavelength with Burn Down the Capital & Goethe-Institut Toronto

The July 2018 installment of Wavelength’s year-round Monthly Music Series, presented in association with Burn Down the Capital and the Goethe-Institut Toronto, will feature a rare appearance by Faust – featuring founding members Werner “Zappi” Diermaier and Jean-Hervé Péron – who are touring North America in support of their 13th album, Fresh Air. Never content to pander to nostalgia or their cult status, Faust remains committed to weirdness and mischief. Their recent shows have included everything from a cement mixer to a quarter of knitters on stage.

Ever influential, Faust and the “Krautrock” or kosmische Musik (“cosmic music”) continues to inspire new generations of independently-minded musicians. The Wavelength concert will feature local support by Toronto’s Castle If a.k.a. electronic composer and analog synth performer, Jess Forrest.

Faust was founded in 1971 and originally composed of Werner "Zappi" Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert, Jean-Hervé Péron, Rudolf Sosna and Gunther Wüsthoff, working with record producer Uwe Nettelbeck and engineer Kurt Graupner. Faust's eponymously titled debut LP surfaced in 1971.
In 2014, Peron and Diermaier regrouped with the new album jUSt (or Just Us), a collection of sometimes skeletal song structures they offered up with the intention that other musicians use them as foundations on which to build their own creative works. The duo toured the United States in 2016, working with a revolving cast of guest musicians. Faust's 2017 full-length album, Fresh Air, consists of selections from these performances.
