German media artists connect and work in Toronto

The Goethe-Institut Toronto and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) continue their biennial Filmmaker Residency project. For its fourth installment, we are happy to announce Benjamin & Stefan Ramírez Pérez as the 2018 Artists-in-Residence.

The Goethe-LIFT Residency enables filmmakers from Germany to bring their film-based work to Toronto and develop new projects in collaboration with the local community. While the artists have access to high-class equipment and facilities, the project also aims to connect the guests with Canadian artists and filmmakers. Screenings and workshops facilitating the exchange of ideas go hand in hand with the artists’ production of new films.

During their residency, the Pérez brothers will experiment with forms of literary adaption and explore the lines between memoir, fantasy, and poetry they discovered in Toronto-based Lynn Crosbie’s writing.

Benjamin Ramírez Pérez currently lives and works in Amsterdam. He graduated from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2009 and, in 2013, received the Prize of the German Federal Association of Film Journalists for Best Experimental Film. His films have, among others, been screened at the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Stefan Ramírez Pérez graduated from Vancouver Film School in 2009 and obtained a diploma from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2017. His works include videos, performances, and experimental films which have been screened at many festivals, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück, and the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. In 2017, he won the Grand Art Prize of the Friends of KHM and his work “Stick it” was part of the Goethe-Institut Toronto’s fall 2017 show Emerging Filmmakers.
