Master of the Universe

Join us this month for our #DeutscherFilmklub. We will be showing Master of the Universe by Marc Bauder.

“One word characterizes our cinematic work in the finance industry: FEAR. The industry is afraid to reveal itself. Every move could be falsely interpreted by the outside world. Before they take that risk, they’d rather say nothing at all.” – Marc Bauder, Director

Shot solely in an abandoned bank building in Frankfurt am Main, this documentary reveals the inner workings of the international finance industry. Director Marc Bauder allows us to get a glimpse into the otherwise inscrutable world of global finance. Former investment banker, Rainer Voss, reminisces on his working years in some of the world's leading banking corporations. Questioned by Bauder, he reveals his insights on how the financial world really operates and his views on the dynamics in markets and recession. Voss recalls the professional and personal struggles, along with the ethical dilemmas he often faced. Bauder’s documentary questions whether the global financial crisis changed anything.

2019 marks the centenary of Bauhaus, a German art school that was famous for its approach to design. To mark its history and significance, this year's #DeutscherFilmklub theme is, "Bauhaus and beyond." You are cordially invited to the screening and the discussion afterwards.

The film is in German with English subtitles. The event is free but space is limited, RSVP by emailing bib-toronto@goethe.de
