Alice in the Cities by Wim Wenders.
This road movie is the first part of Wim Wenders's “Road Movie trilogy” and an important contribution to the New German Cinema. Although shot in 1973, early in his career, the film touches on themes that will become essential for Wenders's work: the American myth, freedom of the road and travel. In
Alice in the Cities, the journalist Philip Winter experiences a life crisis. When he fails to deliver an article about the United States in time, he decides to go back to Germany. At the airport he meets Alice and her mother, who disappears soon after. Philipp is left with Alice and for the first time is responsible for someone else than himself. Their travels lead the unlikely couple through Ruhr to Munich to find Alice’s grandmother.
Wim Wenders came to international prominence as one of the pioneers of the New German Cinema during the 1970s and is considered to be one of the most important figures in contemporary German film. In addition to his feature-films, his work as a screenwriter, director, producer and author also encompasses an abundance of documentary films, international photo exhibitions, film books and prose collections. His most noted work includes his road movie trilogy
Alice in the Cities, The Wrong Move and
Kings of the Road, in which the protagonists try to come to terms with their rootlessness in postwar Germany. His international breakthrough is connected to movies such as
Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire and
The State of Things.
2019 marks the centenary of Bauhaus, a German art school that was famous for its approach to design. To mark its history and significance, this year's #DeutscherFilmklub theme is, "Bauhaus and beyond." You are cordially invited to the screening and the discussion afterwards.
