TIFF '22 brings a selection of German films and co-productions, including Special Presentations and award-winning titles. 

A very special occasion for the Goethe-Institut Toronto will be the TIFF world premiere of Canadian-Colombian migration drama So Much Tenderness by Lina Rodriguez: Her team, including German actor Sebastian Kowollik, shot parts of the film at the Goethe!

 

All Quiet on the Western Front

This impassioned, visually arresting interpretation of the classic German anti-war novel makes the pacifist case to contemporary audiences through its depiction of the horrible madness of World War I and the tragedy of a doomed generation.

1899

World Premiere
By Baran bo Odar & Jantje Friese starring Ben Ashenden, Aneurin Barnard, Anton Lesser

The new mystery horror series "1899" will see its world premiere on September 13 as part of TIFF’s Primetime program, teasing the first two episodes of the much-anticipated Netflix production. Showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar and actors Emily Beecham (Hail, Caesar!) and Andreas Pietschmann (Dark; Beloved Sisters) will be present.

In 2014, Friese and Odar premiered their popular thriller "Who Am I" starring Tom Schilling and Elyas M’Barek at TIFF and returned in 2017 with the world premiere of the Netflix series "Dark,” which went on to become an award-winning global audience hit.
