About the book
A bouquet of flowers, a spice, a great wine… We like to smell what reminds us of good times or which revives deep emotions. Undoubtedly, the sense of smell exerts a power over how we perceive the world. But what do we really know about the subtle mechanisms that go into play in our brains to amplify smells and exhilarate us? How do we explain that our nostrils bring back to our memory buried memories like the scent of a book, the scent of love, the scent of a roast at the family table?
This fascinating journey through a science that sees beyond the tip of its nose leads us from surprise to surprise, until medical recognition of the importance of olfaction. Indeed, recent scientific research establishes strong links between loss of smell and certain diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and COVID-19.
Each chapter of this essay is accompanied by some practical advice in order to better tame our sense of smell, a sense so often neglected.
