Le Grand Balcon
October 19, 2016 - January 15, 2017

Curated by Philippe Pirotte, director of the art academy Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule in Frankfurt, this edition’s theme is loosely based on Jean Genet’s Le Balcon, in which the play’s balcony is a space of contestation between revolution and counter-revolution, reality and illusion.

As an exhibition, Le Grand Balcon aims to generate experiences that open up a mental space to rethink some of our most pressing matters—our ruinous ecological practices, the accelerating dematerialisation of the economy and the evolution towards a global prophetic community turned against itself. The Biennale de Montréal will be showcasing numerous important German artists and artists based in Germany in its 2016 edition:

Thomas Bayrle
Shannon Bool
Isa Genzken
Judith Hopf
Anne Imhof
Impure Fiction
Shahryar Nashat

The works of Anne Imhof and Shahryar Nashat are presented in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut.
