North America's biggest documentary film festival Hot Docs brings hundreds of films to Canadian audiences each spring. The Goethe-Institut is adding a coda with selected German documentaries that have won the Goethe Documentary Prize @ DOK Leipzig Festival in recent years. A conversation about cultural specificity in documentary filmmaking and international vs. national festival programming.

In FORGET ME NOT, David Sieveking portrays the domestic care of his mother, who, like millions of others, is suffering from Alzheimer’s. David’s parents were active in the student movement of the 1960s and led an “open relationship,” which is now being tested in a dramatic way through the mother’s illness.

The changes taking place force the family to deal with its conflicts, bringing them all closer together. With humour and candour, David Sieveking’s family chronicle is characterized by unaffected participation and loving affection, where the human being is at the centre of the story, not the illness.

David Sieveking, born in 1977, studied Directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb) and worked as an editor, 1st AD and actor for film and television. In 2003, he participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus. A selection of his films include the shorts NACHDREH (2000), GANGSTA GUEST HOUSE (2002), DIE AMERIKANISCHE BOTSCHAFT (2003), MR. SINGH (2004, an episode of the feature ASYLUM), and the docs SENEGALLEMAND (2007), DAVID WANTS TO FLY (2010), and FORGET ME NOT (2012).
