Gardens of Enchantment

By Mere Phantoms (Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson) and Navid Navab

Shadow projection in window, on St-Laurent Boul.

February 6 – April 9, 2017, daily 9:15 pm to 5 am.

An original shadow installation by local artists Mere Phantoms will welcome visitors into an enchanting space composed of light and shadow and accompanied by an in-situ audiovisual environment composed by Navid Navab. Together they have taken inspiration from the long and rich history of Germany’s public gardens and the German paper-cutting tradition of Scherenschnitte. Gardens of Enchantment will transform the Goethe-Institut, both inside and out, into an ephemeral urban oasis filled with lush shadow imagery - by day through an installation of papercut-out models and by night through the window projections outside.

Mere Phantoms  (Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson)

Based in Montreal, Mere Phantoms combines intricate paper cut outs, with projected light to create place-specific shadow installations and performances. By inviting audiences to participate in creating and animating the work, Mere Phantoms designs immersive environments that challenge traditional artist-audience relationships. Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson both have Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees from Emily Carr University (2002, and 2003). The duo produces community engaged workshops, projects and exhibitions in Canada and abroad.

Navid Navab

Navid Navab is a Montreal based media alchemist, composer/improviser, audiovisual sculptor, gesture bender, and multidisciplinary artist. Interested in the poetics of gesture, materiality, and embodiment, his work investigates the transmutation of matter and the enrichment of its inherent performative qualities. Navid uses gestures, rhythms and vibration from everyday life as basis for real-time compositions, resulting in augmented acoustical poetry and painterly light that enchants improvisational and pedestrian movements.
