Andreas Dresen, known for his intimate and finely-observed films based in former East Germany, has returned to familiar territory in his heartfelt and humorous biopic of the contradictory life of Gerhard Gundermann.
Gundermann was an excavator operator and cult singer in former East Germany, who tragically died at 43 in 1998. He’s a colourful character (who also worked as a Stasi informer) and the type of person who rubs others the wrong way.

“Gundermann is one of the richest, most distinctive, greatest films about East Germany. And maybe the best that Dresen has ever directed because its sense of goodwill is ultimately not left at the threshold of reconciliation.” - SPIEGEL online
