Canadian artists & new works around community and solidarity
Commissioned & co-produced by the Goethe-Institut Toronto
In spring 2020, the urge to create instructional performances reached new heights: locked in, with limited social contacts or in physical distance – without a venue like a theatre, gallery, concert hall or club to go to, to meet and exchange, the private environment turns into the place for interaction. In times when meetings are limited and art institutions keep their doors shut, scores become a transdisciplinary artistic practice for connecting people in their isolations and with their surroundings; to keep creating performances by making the audience become the protagonist of pieces that are written for them.
“1000 Scores. Pieces for Here, Now & Later” is an online performance space that presents new scores from global artists across the genres on the website
www.1000scores.com. Each score is an instructional art piece for one person, commissioned by the project in collaboration between international partner institutions and the artistic team. New scores are published regularly on the website to build an ongoing archive disseminated via social media and the project’s
newsletter.
The Goethe-Institut Toronto is a project partner, commissioning scores by Canadian artists across the genres, gender, ethnicities, age groups and communities in cooperation with 1000 Scores. All address the question of what "compliCITY" means to them – collaboration and solidarity in the public/virtual space and their communities.

Angela Miracle Gladue (Miss Chief Rocka) is an award winning dancer, choreographer, educator, and emerging fashion designer from amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta - Treaty 6 territory) and is a proud member of Papaschase and Frog Lake First Nation. Currently, Angela tours with the Juno Award winning group A Tribe Called Red.
Ása is the songwriter, singer and guitarist of Toronto teen post-punk alt rock band Kingdom of Birds. They have played close to 100 shows opening for acts such as Sarah Harmer, Partner, and Nehiyawak. Their last EP Glitz was featured as a Buried Treasure on NPR program Sound Opinions.
Shari Kasman is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist and writer. She created a photobook, Galleria: The Mall That Time Forgot (2018) looking into local history as well as the rise and fall of the shopping mall. She subsequently published an abridged and updated version of the book, Goodbye, Galleria (2019). Shari’s also the author of a collection of short fiction, Everything Life Has to Offer (Invisible Publishing, 2016). Experiments in various media have led her to create eclectic work, including a 350-foot photo-collage around a construction site and in 2020 the community-driven public space intervention Bloordale Beach on a derelict construction site. Shari’s background is in music (BFA, York University). She has taught piano to many talented students (and to some untalented ones, as well).
Curtis “Talwst” Santiago is an Edmonton-born musician-turned-artist of, best known for his political miniature dioramas bridging anything from impressionism to pop culture. The Trinidadian-Canadian artist apprenticed with Indigenous artist Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun in British Columbia, attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design and recently realized a work with Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich, where he now lives. He has exhibited at The New Museum, NY; Drawing Center New York; Manifesto Festival Art Exhibition Toronto; Vancouver Art Gallery; The Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami, FL; Art Gallery of Ontario; Frieze Art Fair among others. The artist was included in the SITE Santa Fe SITELines.2018 Biennial, Casa Tomada, in Santa Fe, NM and was featured in the 2018 Biennale de Dakar, Senegal. His work is in the permanent collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY.
Elaine Whittaker is a Canadian artist working at the intersection of art, science, medicine, and ecology. She considers biology as contemporary art practice and as the basis for her installations, sculptures, paintings, drawings, and digital images. Whittaker has exhibited in art and science galleries and museums in Canada, France, Italy, UK, Ireland, Latvia, China, South Korea, Australia, Mexico, and the U.S. Artwork created as Artist-in-Residence with the Pelling Laboratory for Augmented Biology (University of Ottawa) was exhibited in La Fabrique du Vivant at the Pompidou Centre, Paris in 2019. She was one of the first Artists-in-Residence with the Ontario Science Centre in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto. Her work has been featured in art, literary, and medical journals, and books, including Bio Art: Altered Realities by William Myers (Thames & Hudson, 2015).
1000 Scores has been created by artists and curators Helgard Haug (Berlin), David Helbich (Brussels) & Cornelius Puschke (Berlin).
Helgard Haug is an author, director and co-founder, with Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel, of the theatre label Rimini Protokoll. Many of their works feature interactivity and a playful use of technology. The Goethe-Institut Toronto co-commissioned their work "Best Before" for the Push Festival Vancouver and the Vancouver Cultural Olympics 2010, and co-presented "Situation Rooms" at Luminato Festival 2016.
David Helbich is an independent composer, visual and performance artists, as well as a photographer and teacher, who creates a divers range of experimental and conceptual works for the stage, paper and online media and in public space. A recurrent interest is the direct work with a self-performing audience.
Cornelius Puschke is a dramaturge, lecturer and author. In close cooperation with artists, he develops performances, festival programs, discourse events, workshops and texts. His current focus of work is theater in the pandemic.
