Toile de vie
The work of 25-year-old Aurélie Djiena Ymsa is inspired from a family legacy in basketwork. This legacy is apparent in her canvasses, whose woven fabric is reminiscent of the intermixing of humans just as it imparts precious values such as sharing, solidarity and peace. Brought up in an art-inclined environment in Loum, a locality in the Littoral Region of Cameroon, the young lady’s childhood was spent drawing, painting, weaving… which steered her towards visual arts. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at the Institut des Beaux-arts in Nkongsamba in 2012 and her mentors (Jean Jacques Kanté, Hervé Youmbi, Kristine Tsala, Ruth Belinga…) helped her find her way. Her artistic approach, be it in painting, installation or video art, involves playing with the contrast between black and white, while blending in all the other colours. The young artist, who won the “Prix Spécial Femmes” in the “Jeunes Espoirs” contest organised in 2017 during the Salon urbain de Douala (SUD), has won prestigious galleries (such as Doual’Art, MAM and Carré des artistes in Douala) over.
