The Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen (Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony) is a public foundation founded by Saxony in 1993. The idea behind it is to establish a strong independent institution to promote Saxon art and culture in all its diversity.
Headquartered on the premises of the Festspielhaus Hellerau, a Dresden theatre, the Foundation funds projects, awards grants and purchases works by visual artists. Its goals are to develop new forms of artistic expression, to enduringly put contemporary art and culture across to the public, to cultivate our cultural heritage and to promote aspiring artists. Its key criteria for selection are innovative capacity and quality. The Foundation is flexible, reacting through its ongoing projects to social and cultural changes in the Saxon region and in neighbouring European countries.

Every year the Foundation funds roughly two hundred fifty projects in contemporary culture and the arts, in the fields of visual art, performing arts and music, film, literature, social culture and interdisciplinary projects. Its own ongoing projects, moreover, provide impetus for art and culture in Saxony. The Foundation also awards project and residency grants to help established and aspiring artists, and it acquires artworks and musical instruments.
