“Digitized World – A Better World?”

Undergraduate students studying German at colleges, universities and higher education institutions in Hong Kong and Macau now have the opportunity for the first time to demonstrate their language proficiency at the level A1 to B1 in a German Language Olympics for the academic year 2017/2018.The winners will be awarded scholarships for language courses at a Goethe-Institut or at a university in Germany.

The competition is organized by the Goethe-Institut Hongkong and the German language departments of five universities: Hong Kong Baptist University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong City University, the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the consulates of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in Hong Kong, as well as the Lufthansa Group and Presence Switzerland.

Participants of the competition will be assigned to different language divisions according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):

  1. Language Level A1
  2. Language Level A2
  3. Language Level B1


Procedure
Division: Participants will be assigned to a language division based on their language ability.

Preliminary round: participants shall submit a short video no longer than 5 minutes on a topic assigned for their language division before 15th January 2018. An independent jury will select up to 5 participants from each division for the final round.

Final round: participants will present and debate on the topic "Digitized World - A Better World?" at the Final at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 17th March 2018.

The independent competition jury consists of representatives from the Goethe-Institut, the consulates of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the Lufthansa Group, as well as from the five universities. The evaluation criteria are, first and foremost, the interpretation of the main theme in relation to the content, arguments and creativity according to each language level.

Important Dates
  1. Before 30th November 2017: Registration
  2. Before 15th December 2017: Submission of proof of German language proficiency*
  3. Before 15th January 2018: Submission of short video for the prelimary round
  4. 31st January 2018: Results announced for the preliminary round
  5. 17th March 2018: Final round - presentation and debate on the theme "Digitalized World - A Better World". at the Chinese University of Hong Kong

*As proof of language proficiency, participants can either submit a certificate issued by the Goethe-Institut with their application, or complete a free online placement test at the Goethe-Institut Hongkong. A test code will be sent to you by email upon registration of the Deutscholympiade.

Olympic Gold Winner:
Language Level A1: Scholarship for a two-week language course at a Goethe-Institut in Germany (accommodation included, without flight)
Language Level A2: Scholarship for a two-week language course at a Goethe-Institut in Germany (accommodation included, without flight)
Language Level B1: Scholarship for a summer language course at a German university (with flights and accommodation included)
 
First runner-up for all three language levels: Scholarship for a German course at the Goethe-Institut Hongkong
 
Second runner-up for all three language levels: One-year membership of the Goethe-Institut Library and presents from the Consulates of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in Hong Kong and Macau
 
All finalists will be awarded a Swatch watch sponsored by the Swiss Consulate and Presence Switzerland, as well as gifts (books and souvenirs) from the three consulates and the Goethe-Institut.
 
The final competition for the first German Olympics for students will take place on 17th March, 2018 within the framework of a student festival at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Fulltime undergraduate students in Hong Kong and Macau,who are currently studying German as their major or minor subject, or as electives at colleges, universities, and other higher education institutions in Hong Kong and Macau, may now apply for the German Olympics until 30th November.
 
Please fill out the registration form (with signature) and send it as a scan with proof of language proficiency* and a copy of your student ID by email to deutscholympiade@hongkong.goethe.org

Competition Conditions:
The following applicants are excluded from the competition:
  • Students with German-speaking parent(s) and/or a German school-leaving certificate
  • Exchange students and full-time students from EU-countries
  • Master and doctor students
