Comics as Literary Adaptations
German comic artist Franziska Walther gives an insight into her way of working and shows how to adapt a story as a comic or graphic novel.
The workshop participants will work together with Franziska Walther on adapting a short story or poem.
At the beginning, there will be a short introduction into what means and tools are available for visual storytellers to design the script for their story. Then we will explore what different plot options and conceptional ways are possible for literary adaptations.
In the second part of the workshop, we will talk about the text that we are going to adapt and get to know it better through different exercises. The focus here is on trying things out, a learning by doing process.
In the third and final part of the workshop, we will add the finishing touches and look at some of the results.
Franziska Walther will contribute the knowledge and expertise of her PhD thesis, which she wrote about graphic literary adaptations.
The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Some prior knowledge and experience of drawing will be advantageous.
