In her first solo exhibition at the Goethe-Institut in Hong Kong, Carla Chan will show with a selection of only four works of art the diversity of her oeuvre. At a first glance it is a wild and rough landscape that Carla Chan – now based in Berlin – is offering the visitor. A perfect counterbalance to the noisy neighbourhood in Wanchai with its never-ending traffic. Hong Kong is a fast changing construction set in continuity with inhabitants that often feel driven by circumstances they can’t control. With her media-based works Carla Chan has created a strong counter-proposal to this illuminated and fast urban landscape of Hong Kong. Her videos like Snö (2015) or The ground, the cloud, the moon (2017) are breathing the unpredictable and they show in the variety of their abstractions the wealth of an unsparing reality. Her paper prints Clouded White – horizon (2017) are frozen moments taken from an endless transformation. And her melancholic video Breathing Between the Lines (2017) awakens our longing for the silence of a landscape in which our soul can finally come to rest. Seen that way Carla Chan’s exhibition is a perfect show for those who love the film “Wings of Desire” (Der Himmel über Berlin).

About Carla Chan
Carla Chan (b. 1989) is a mixed media artist who is based in Berlin and Hong Kong. She works with a variety of media including video, installation, photography and printmaking. Minimal in style and form, Chan’s works often toy with the blurred boundaries between reality and illusion, figure and abstraction. Her recent practice focuses on the ambiguity in nature. Bridging natural transformation and unpredictable computer algorithms, her works are consolidated with a cohesive dynamic between form, means and content. Recently she won TOY Berlin Master Award by Burger Collection (CH/HK) and the Sponsorship prize from Minister of Arts in SAXON STATE(GE).Stated as one of the up-and-coming emerging artists in Germany, her works have been showcased extensively in different international exhibitions which included, solo exhibition at Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art (DK) , group exhibition at ZKM - Centre for Culture and Media Technology Karlsruhe, (DE) , Hek (Haus der elektronischen Künste), Basel (CH), Tang Contemporary Art(CN), K11 Art Space (HK). Her works has been shortlisted in The Lumen Prize and Discovery LOOP Barcelona video Art Award, 2016 and selected in Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards 2012 in Hong Kong Museum of Art.
