Making Bauhaus: A Bauhaus Fest to celebrate its 100th Anniversary
On 1 April 1919, Walter Gropius officially opened the doors to the newly founded Bauhaus, which subsequently became arguably the most influential art & design educational institution of the 20th century. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this occasion, the creative departments of five Hong Kong universities collaborated with the Goethe-Institut Hongkong, the DAAD and the German General Consulate to put together a series of activities and events honouring the Bauhaus’ achievements in the past and considering its relevance and potentials for the present and the future.
The Bauhaus was however not only a place of teaching & learning, the catalyst of innovation, and the origin of an aesthetic, the Bauhaus was also a place to party. The Bauhaus was famous for its motto parties, at which students from all faculties tried to outdo each other with unusual, imaginative costumes, decorations and performances. So what could be more suitable for the opening of the anniversary year than a Bauhaus party? Under the motto "Making Bauhaus - let's celebrate!"
, students of the Academy of Visual Arts, HKBU with their Professor Peter Benz will host their own interpretation of a celebratory Bauhaus Fest in the gallery of the Goethe-Institut.
