A Hybrid Festival on the State of Freedom in Europe

Since 2017, Goethe-Instituts in Europe have been working together with over 50 partners in the Freiraum project to investigate the meaning of freedom in Europe today. This question has become more urgent, especially in times of corona. Contact restrictions, curfews and the closing of borders in the wake of the corona pandemic currently limit personal and public freedoms in Europe.

With the hybrid Freiraum Festival, the Goethe-Institut, together with the partners of the Freiraum network, is now initiating open dialogues about the new, pandemic realities in Europe and for solidarity in a resistant and inclusive society on the occasion of the German EU Council Presidency.

The program from 30 October 30 to 1 November 2020 brings intellectuals, cultural workers and artists from all over Europe together. It consists of an online program with pre-recorded discussions, lectures and performances accessible from across Europe, as well as physical live events in 20 European cities such as Brussels, Berlin, Athens, Turin and Prague. In addition to the various online programs and physical live-events, the Freiraum-Manifest will be officially presented to the EU commissioner Mariya Gabriel.
