The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (or simply the University of Bonn) is among Germany's larger universities, with more than 27,000 students. It was established in 1818, and instead of a campus layout is distributed across the entire city. The main building, which houses most facilities of the faculty of philosophy, both theological faculties and the faculties of law and political science, is very close to the Goethe-Institut. The linguistics department with the integrated language learning center in the Institute for Linguistsics, Media and Musicology shares the same building with the Goethe-Institut. The University of Bonn and the Goethe-Institut are linked in a close partnership. Students taking a B.A. or master's degree in German as a second or third language have the opportunity to apply and broaden their knowledge through internships at the Goethe-Institut. Course participants at the Goethe-Institut Bonn are permitted to sit in on university lectures, set up "tandem" language-learning partnerships with German students, use the shared library and visit the university's student affairs office to find out about opportunities to study in Bonn.
