With around 235,000 inhabitants (as of 2024), Freiburg is Germany’s southernmost major city. In addition to the historic Albert Ludwig University – one of the oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions in the country – the city at the edge of the Black Forest is home to numerous research institutes, such as those of the Max Planck and Fraunhofer Societies, which contribute to its student-oriented atmosphere. Freiburg is known for its historic old town centred around the cathedral, from whose tower one can enjoy breathtaking views extending to the French Vosges. The city is also famous for its “Bächle” – small water channels that have flowed through the old town’s streets since the Middle Ages. Freiburg is a pioneer in sustainability, focusing on renewable energy and climate-friendly public transport.
Culture
Freiburg offers a rich and diverse cultural scene. Internationally acclaimed ensembles, choirs and orchestras deliver musical excellence at the concert hall, while the city’s historic theatre hosts a wide range of productions. Close to the French border, Freiburg also provides a home for the alternative arts scene with the E-Werk – a creative centre for dance and theatre – and the Jazzhaus offers thrilling concerts all year round. Trendy nightclubs invite visitors to celebrate into the early hours and immerse themselves in Freiburg’s vibrant cultural life.
Leisure
Freiburg is a city that lives outdoors. The region around Germany’s greenest city is known for its sunny weather and ideal conditions for wine growing. Traditional wine festivals, where visitors can enjoy local specialities such as the famous Black Forest gateau, are therefore a regular highlight throughout the year. The city’s many parks and meadows invite people to enjoy picnics in the sunshine. Those who enjoy being active can cycle along the River Dreisam or explore the Black Forest on foot. The nearby Alsace region, Strasbourg, or Basel also make for worthwhile excursions.

I used to find learning German really difficult and I tried lots of different things. But on the language course at the Goethe-Institut, I suddenly started making rapid progress.
