Caritas Egypt is affiliated to the Caritas International Confederation, a network of Catholic charities.The first Caritas office opened in Germany in 1897 to help vulnerable communities at times of crisis such as wartorn individuals and immigrants. The organization worked on nursing victims of crisis and supporting them in fighting hunger, disease, poverty, marginalization, and addiction. Nowadays, Caritas has offices in over 165 countries and implements projects in 200 of the most impoverished countries. It works on community development, implements human rights policies to raise awareness, shares expertise, and supports vulnerable individuals and provides them with opportunities to understand the full capacity of their capabilities in order to lead a healthy social, economic and cultural life.

Past projects

  • Basic Education Project that includes annual adult literacy programs
  • Establishing cultural centers such as the village and suburb library, which encourages and supports beneficiaries of the adult literacy programs to develop their skills.
  • Participation and Empowerment Project, which worked on supporting villagers to develop and improve their society
  • Safety and Security Project, which held various seminars, festivals and local community meetings as well as board meetings that aimed to improve women’s rights in Egypt to provide a safe environment that advocates her rights on a local and national level
  • Economic empowerment for women
  • Plan Initiative, which was a women's empowerment initiative that executed projects, established adult literacy schools, helped women issue national IDs and birth certificates, and helped mothers receive child disability assistance payment.
  • Eshraq Plus was a project that aimed to provide technical support and training, as well as implement “Learn and be Free” program
