Betrachten wir eine Statistik der 500 bestplatzierten Filme der Welt, können wir sehen, dass nur etwa 30 Prozent der sprechenden Charaktere Frauen sind. Die Verteilung von männlichen Darstellern im Vergleich zu weiblichen Darstellerinnen liegt bei 2 zu 1. Weibliche Regisseure sind mit rund 30 Prozent bei der Produktion von Dokumentarfilmen vertreten, während sie im Bereich der kommerziellen Spielfilme lediglich 16 Prozent abdecken.
Eine weibliche Top-Schauspielerin verdient wesentlich weniger als ihre männlichen Kollegen. Vor diesem Hintergrund soll die Filmreihe als Anlass dienen darüber zu diskutieren, wie Frauen in Film und Fernsehen porträtiert werden und wie diese Darstellung die Wahrnehmung von Frauen in unserer Gesellschaft beeinflusst. Darüber hinaus soll diskutiert werden, wie Film und Fernsehen das Selbstverständnis von Frauen beeinflusst und damit auch ihre Rolle und ihre Chancen in der Gesellschaft.
