Goethe-Institut Äthiopien

Gamify  your City-Future! Creating a game about City Planning and Urban Development

HACKATHON from 17-21 October 2016
Jointly organized by Goethe-Institut and EiABC

About:

Gamification means the use of game elements in non-game contexts in order to engage users in solving problems and learning. During the five-days-Hackathon participants will develop different stories and game ideas around the topic “city Planning and urban development”, will visit various places in the analog space and develop a first prototype for a game design to be used with a mobile phone app.

The best game designs will have the chance to get tested and further developed until the final gaming app will be officially launched in January 2017.

Addis Ababa is changing rapidly and people are witnessing massive transformations. This gaming project offers an open approach to invite a wider audience into the discussions about social, economic, and cultural aspects of a growing city. It is the aim of the project to make the present and the future of Addis Ababa playable und thinkable.

Dates and Venues:
  • 17-21 October 2016, Goethe-Institut Addis Ababa and different places in the city: Hackathon
  • From November till January: Further development and testing of the gaming apps with online support.
  • 23-27 January 2016, Goethe-Institut Addis Ababa: Finalising and official launching of the gaming apps.
Technical details:

The technical platform for the game development will be the already existing app “espoto”. This app is a local-based-game-app combined with an easy to use content management system.
