An event in the context of the project “DRIN – Visions for Children’s Books”
Please observe the time zone: 3-5 pm CET!
Children’s books shape the world view we grow up with. For this reason it is important for all children to be able to recognize themselves in stories, illustrations and narratives and, at the same time, to learn about the different realities of life around them. But what is the situation like in children’s books and how diverse is the children’s book industry? Who are the players in the field? How do the publishing houses work both in Germany and abroad to push equal participation in the book branch for everyone, so that all the children and their families can find books to identify with?
In the context of the Frankfurter Buchmesse the project “DRIN – Visions for Children’s Books” organizes a panel discussion relating the topic.
The panelists are:
- Olaolu Fajembola (researcher for cultural studies, founder of Tebalou, an online shop for diverse books and toys, author of the book „Gib mir mal die Hautfarbe“)
- Gayna Theophilus (Acquiring Director of the Canadian Annick Press)
- Wandi Wrede (founder of the publishing house stolzeaugenbooks)
- Chantal-Fleur Sandjon (writer, expert in the project DRIN - Visions for children's books)
The moderator for the event is
Dr. Sandra van Lente, a researcher and co-author of the report “Rethinking ‚Diversity‘ in Publishing”.
After the discussion
Chantal-Fleur Sandjon and
Jasmina El Bouamraoui (illustrator) will present the guide for diverse children’s literature, which was produced as part of the DRIN-project. The guide that goes by the name “
In Our Own Words: BIPOC Perspectives in Children's Literature" focuses on the importance of bringing more diversity not only to the stories but to the structures of the book industry as well.
The event will be held in English and can also be followed online via live-stream.
