Lectures and discussion
Covid-19 and the pandemic have ruled our everyday life for a year now. The effects the pandemic has on different groups in our societies are very different. To reach everyone in society, the ways of communication need to be chosen carefully by those responsible. Which channels are being used in the communication about Covid-19, and how does the information reach also those who do not or are not able to follow the usual media channels?
The event consists of four short input-talks (10 minutes each) that will highlight different aspects of communication about Covid-19. The language of the event is English. Interpretation into Finnish and sign language interpretation into Finnish are provided. The interpretations are provided by students of the University of Helsinki and Diak.
Talks
- Sari Hammar, Project Manager, Family and Social Services, Social and Health Services, City of Espoo: "Multilingual and multichannel Coronainfo-service in Espoo".
Hammar will talk about the strategy of the city of Espoo to inform their citizens.
- Tuija Kinnunen, University Lecturer, Translation Studies, University of Helsinki: "Translation policies in Helsinki Metropolitan Area."
Kinnunen's research is based on preliminary findings she has collected with her colleagues Päivi Kuusi and Simo Määttä.
- Friederike Lüpke, Professor, African and Middle Eastern languages, University of Helsinki, together with Miriam Weidl and Jérémi Fahed Sagna: "Message in a bottle? Focusing on recipients' repertoires and means for successful crisis communication".
This talk will discuss an inclusive multilingual Covid-information campaign we're running in Senegal, based on previous multilingual literacy teaching.
- Jörg Tiedemann, Professor, Language Technology, University of Helsinki: "The growing responsibilities of language technology - equality and wellbeing and how they depend on efficient information access".

Covid-19 and communication
INTERPRETATION
The language of the event is English. Interpretation into Finnish and Finnish sign language interpretation are provided. The event can be viewed using either the Zoom client application (https://zoom.us/download) or a web browser such as Chrome. Please note that features required for viewing closed captions or sign language interpreting are only supported in the Zoom application and these services may not work correctly on browsers.
To ensure that the interpretation works smoothly, the audience needs to install the Zoom-app on the computer/ laptop (Windows: at least version 5.2.1 (44052.0816), Apple: at least version 5.2.1 (44040.0816) or newer versions).
