The picture story book Ameisen, die schaffen viel!

Using the example of the multilingual, appealingly illustrated, picture story book, Ameisen, die schaffen viel! (see also Biblio- & webographie), we advise teachers in primary schools in France to follow these three stages:

    1. Showing the story

    After the children have shared their personal experiences of ants and hares (or rabbits), the teacher moves on to the story, which will be told in English.More ...

    2. Ensuring comprehension

    Working with listening texts, without pictures. More emphasis is given to the “heroes” — the “hare” and the “ant(s)” — through action.More ...

    3. Further work

    Children learn through all their senses, and therefore different senses should be activated simultaneously at school. A lesson that is above all movement-based helps anchor the foreign language in the long-term memory.More ...

    The length and the main emphasis of these individual phrases depend on the size and age of the group. In the pre-school stage the overall approach is particularly important, and enough room should be provided for play-like exploration.
    Depending on the possibilities and the interests of the learner, the ant story can be told in German, English, French or Spanish. The concept of “One person, one language” applies here. It takes time to become accustomed to listening to a new and foreign language: the learner grasps the foreign language step by step, in “chunks” (chunks of language which act as “islands” of understanding) Wherever possible, repetition and ritual should be used. It is helpful to associate preparation and further work in the mother tongue, and to include the children’s prior general knowledge. Visual artwork can fit in as well.
