Artist Residency Goethe at LUX

The Goethe at LUX Residency is for artists based in Germany who work with the moving image to undertake a 3-month residency at LUX in London. The residency is offered by the Goethe-Institut London, the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, promoting the study of German abroad and encouraging international cultural exchange worldwide, and LUX, the UK agency for the support and promotion of artists’ working with the moving image in London.

The Goethe at LUX Residency programme offers the resident artist a comparably generous stipend and a well-equipped setting for working and living, including the accommodation of partners or family, if desired.

Jointly run by LUX and the Goethe-Institut London, two well-established cultural institutions with invaluable local and international expertise, providing contacts, addressing individual needs, and creating a bespoke residency experience in London. The programme is financially secured by the Goethe-Institut and LUX and is organised by dedicated staff from both institutions, who will bring in their cultural expertise and local knowledge.

Over the period of the residency the artist will be supported to research and develop new work with the professional, practical and curatorial support of LUX staff in London and Glasgow. The residency will primarily be based in LUX’s building in Waterlow Park, North London but the artist will have an opportunity to visit and work with LUX Scotland based at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow. During the course of the residency LUX and the Goethe-Institut will work with the resident artist to develop a public events programme around their research, both to showcase their work in London and Glasgow and give opportunities for interactions with the public and other artists. The programme may take the form of screenings, talks, workshops and performances both at LUX, the Goethe-Institut and Highgate Cemetery.

The residency will include the following:

  • Well-equipped accommodation in a dedicated apartment at the Goethe-Institut London including accommodation for partners or family if required.
  • A monthly stipend of €1500 (subject to tax and national insurance),
  • Dedicated desk space at LUX and access to LUX facilities and collection, with professional, practical and curatorial support from LUX and Goethe-Institut London staff.

The residency is for established artists based in Germany who have a minimum of five years of professional practice, who work with the moving image, and would enjoy participating in events as part of our public programme. They also need to be fluent in English. Applicants must be able to prove that they have the right to live and work in the UK for a period of three months and would be eligible for an adequate UK visa if their citizenship status requires it. The UK is not part of the Schengen area which means EU visas may not cover a stay in the UK.
