Founded in 1911, Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company is an independent publisher of religious books, from academic works in theology, biblical studies, religious history and reference to popular titles in spirituality, social and cultural criticism, and literature. Eerdmans also publishes quality children's books under its imprint, Eerdmans Books for Young Readers.

Founded in 2005 by Sandro Ferri and Sandra Ozzola Ferri, Europa Editions publishes works of literary fiction, high-end mystery and noir, and narrative non-fiction from around the world. Exile Editions is a Toronto-based Canadian publisher which specialises in art and literature. An important area of focus is the promotion of Canadian authors and artists for whom various events are organised, including literary competitions. In 2009 over 50 authors were presented at 25 different events. Faber and Faber was established in 1929. Right from the beginning poetry was a fundamental feature of the Faber list. Biographies, memoirs, fiction, poetry, political and religious essays, art and architecture monographs, children's books, and pioneering works on environmental issues have also been part of the Faber publishing programme for many years. Faber and Faber remains one of the last great independent publishing houses in London. With the breadth of its backlist, featuring books by eleven Nobel Peace prize winners and six Booker prize winners, the company continues to grow steadily. During the first 20 years of its existence, the Farrar, Straus and Company publishing house, founded in New York in 1946, bore the name of its founders John C. Farrar and Roger W. Straus. In 1964, the team of directors recruited Robert Giroux. The publishing house was thereupon renamed Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

It focused on entertainment literature, non-fiction, poetry as well as youth and children´s literature and has published a wide range of internationally renowned authors over the years, among which Hermann Hesse, T. S. Eliot, Pär Lagerkvist, Eugenio Montale and Elias Canetti. Although itself a sub-company of the Macmillan publishing group, FSG´s activity is also divided into theme-specific sub-groups. Frontline Books is a relatively new imprint of Pen & Sword Books, specialising in military history. Galileo Publishers was founded in 1995 by Robert Hyde, specialising in high quality illustrated books. Amongst other remarkable publications, they’ve published a translated book about Japanese garden design history and an illustrated poem by Leonard Cohen.

Galileo broke off its activities for a period of about 10 years due to internal restructuring. However, enthusiasm for Albert Vigoleis Thelen’s work, “Die Insel des zweiten Gesichts” (“The Island of Second Sight”), inspired Robert Hyde to reactivate Galileo by publishing the English translation.

Groundwood Books is a Canadian publisher and distributor. It operates both in Canada and in the United States and focuses on the promotion of children’s and young adult’s books by mainly Canadian authors. Stories about the Canadian natives and marginal social groups are predominant themes. Foreign books that set themselves apart from the rest are also sporadically taken into account.

Since 1998, South American authors have been published by the Imprint Libros Tigrillo, both in Spanish and in English. With a heritage stretching back nearly 200 years, HarperCollins was founded in Glasgow in 1819. In 1990, the business merged with Harper & Row – a company established in New York City in 1817 – to create the HarperCollins worldwide brand. Harvill Secker is an imprint of Random House. The Random House Group is one of the largest general book publishing companies in the UK. The Group is based in London and has subsidiary companies in Australia, New Zealand and India, with a joint venture in South Africa called Random House Struik.

The Random House Group distribution business services its own imprints as well as 60 other UK publishers. The publishing group is an independently managed subsidiary of Random House Inc. in the US, the trade book publishing division of Bertelsmann AG - one of the world’s largest and most diversified integrated media companies. Haus Publishing was launched in 2003 when it published the English translation of Sebastian Haffner's biography on Churchill. The London-based publishing company was founded by Barbara Schwepcke, the former publisher of Prospect Magazine.

Barbara Schwepcke was born in Germany, educated at universities in America and England and now publishes English-language editions of biographies on leading international figures, as well as fiction translated from a number of languages including Arabic, Portuguese and German.

Hodder & Stoughton’s story began in 1868 when it was founded by Matthew Henry Hodder and Thomas Wilberforce Stoughton on Paternoster Row, London. Today Hodder & Stoughton is a major publisher within Hachette UK, one of the UK’s biggest publishing groups.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s beginnings date back to the year 1832, when William Ticknor and James Fields founded their own publishing house. It acquired well published names such as Mark Twain and David Thoreau. In 1880 it united with the Boston based Riverside Press which was led by Henry Houghton and George Mifflin and hence Houghton, Mifflin and Company was born, making a name for itself over the years as an important publisher of fiction. Names like Philip Roth, Paul Theroux and Willa Cather feature among its authors. It expanded further in 2007 with the acquisition of the renowned publisher Harcourt Education, where Helen and Kurt Wolff had been working as co-editors since the 60s, publishing such prominent names as Günter Grass, Hannah Arendt and Konrad Lorenz. The joint catalogue, which first appeared in 2009, offers around 90 new releases every year, from a wide range of topics. In addition, it offers selected titles in eBook form, children’s and young adult’s books as well as titles from other imprints, such as Clarion Books.

Hyphen Press started out in 1980 with a strong focus on design, and particularly on typography. This publisher looks for work of quality and distinction rather than novelty. J&L Books is a non-profit publisher of artists' books based in Atlanta and New York. It was founded in 2000 by Jason Fulford and Leanne Shapton and is mainly financed by donations. J&L produces two to five new books each year of previously unpublished or rarely seen work by contemporary artists such as Amy O'Neill, Jeff Barnett-Winsby and Susanne Kippenberger.

The John Murray publishing house was founded in 1768 and has a remarkable history. Many notable scientists and inventors chose to be published by Murray and since 1917 the publishing house has built up a list of well-known fiction writers. In 2002 John Murray was sold to Hodder Headline which has now become part of Hachette UK. Murray's backlist includes translations of works by the German author Claudia Schreiber.

Kales Press is named after its founder Kenneth Kales. The Carlsbad (California) based publishing house specialises in non-fiction with a focus on history, art and science. It strives to win over the most famous authors for its programme, such as high ranking politicians or Nobel-Prize laureates like Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard. In the same way it chooses its authors, Kales Press greatly values quality in the production process which gives its books an aesthetic bonus.
