Art Night presents Vajiko Chachkhiani
Art Night is a free annual contemporary arts festival, presenting acclaimed international art in unusual locations across the city. This year it will transform the Thames riverbank with one-off projects by internationally renowned artists. You will be able to find artworks across a dozen exceptional sites along the trail. The video installation Life Track (2015) by Vajiko Chachkhiani will be presented at an outdoor space during Art Night.
Hayward Gallery Director Ralph Rugoff and the curatorial team have taken their cue from the immediate context of the local area, to ask questions about the emotional and political associations of ‘home’, including residency, refuge and security; and even the quest to create habitats on other planets. This edition of Art Night also explores the rich history of gardening and urban produce in the area between the South Bank and Battersea Power Station, which once supplied vegetables, fruit and flowers to the whole of London and contains the oldest continually cultivated gardens in the city. A group of Art Night Guides will be on hand across the trail to guide visitors throughout the night, with a dedicated MBNA Thames Clippers boat running a bespoke route until 4am.
Born in Georgia and currently living and working in Berlin, Vajiko Chachkhiani’s work offers a poetic and often haunting interpretation of the themes of death, war and political conflict. Working largely with sculpture, film and installation, Chachkhiani transforms and displaces real world objects in order to interpret human activity, history and conflict.
Previously shown at the 15th Istanbul Bienniale, Life Track (2015) is a video which will be presented at an outdoor space along the Art Night 2018 trail. It is a portrait of human existence under conditions of confinement. The work engages in a tense dialectic of observation, activity, entropy and ageing.
