The inaugural MODE programme presents a range of emerging and established experimental artists from Japan to perform with like-minded musicians from Europe, South America and the US. MODE has been curated by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

As composer, performer, producer, and environmentalist, few artists have as diverse a résumé as that of  Ryuichi Sakamoto. Sakamoto's work has spanned vast musical territories, from pioneering electronic music as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra to crafting globally inspired rock albums, classical compositions, a stretch of minimal/ambient music collaborations, and over thirty film scores.

David Toop (born 1949) has been developing a practice that crosses boundaries of sound, listening, music and materials since 1970. This encompasses improvised music performance, writing, electronic sound, field recording, exhibition curating, sound art installations and opera. It includes seven acclaimed books, including Rap Attack (1984), Ocean of Sound (1995), Sinister Resonance (2010), Into the Maelstrom (2016) and Flutter Echo, a memoir first published in Japan (2017). Briefly a member of David Cunningham’s pop project The Flying Lizards in 1979, he has released thirteen solo albums. His 1978 Amazonas recordings of Yanomami shamanism and ritual were released on Sub Rosa as Lost Shadows (2016). In recent years his collaborations include Rie Nakajima, Akio Suzuki, Tania Chen, John Butcher, Ken Ikeda, Elaine Mitchener, Henry Grimes, Sharon Gal, Camille Norment, Sidsel Endresen, Alasdair Roberts, Thurston Moore.

Yves Tumor (Sean Bowie), an artist who’s levels of creativity know no-limits. With a history of devastating performances, ones in which he gets fully engaged with the crowd, Bowie is one of the best live-performers of our era. With comparisons and links to the likes of NON and Mykki Blanco, Bowie’s repertoire to date features the exotic, experimental, and ethereal and last year’s free download — 'Experiencing the Deposit of Faith' was a solemn, beautiful, record of colour and passion. Having recently signed to Warp Records, Bowie is an artist who always sets out to surprise.

CURL is led by musicians Micachu, Coby Sey and emcee Brother May. They have been putting on events usually on Sunday evenings at Rye Wax in Peckham and The Yard in Hackney Wick since 2016. It’s origins stem from numerous years, playing and performing music at house parties and in concerts within and outside of London. CURL's recent singles and forthcoming compilation aims to document and promote the artists that have presented and performed at CURL’s open and inclusive events held in South and East London. Micachu, Coby Sey and Brother May are among those featured and many more artists. Together, along with some of the UK's most cherished artists, they have independently contributed to the musically progressive and post-genre communities in South London and beyond.

MODE is supported by the Goethe-Institut.
