Platform Easterhouse

From Russia with Jazz, a truly unique event celebrating jazz and football kicks off at Platform in Easterhouse on 23rd June!

Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO), in partnership with Goethe-Institut will be performing live music during the preliminary round of this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia. GIO musicians will be teaming up with some of Germany’s most accomplished improvising musicians and performing live on live – during the real time broadcast of the Germany-vs Sweden match.

Raymond MacDonald, Una MacGlone, Maria Donohue, Sam Beagles and Mike Parr-Burman from GIO will be performing opposite some great jazz musicians from Germany, amongst them the renowned double bass player Alois Kott, the fabulous wunderkind drummer Christian Lillinger along with DJ IllVibe (Vincent von Schlippenbach).

GIO and the German Jazz Musicians will form two bands. One band will ‘play’ Germany, the other band will ‘play’ Sweden. The DJ will take on the role of the referee. As the match is screened onstage, the bands will improvise to the action as it unfolds on the pitch. The DJ directs, interacting with his own sound bites and mixing in the original Russian commentary.

The musicians are currently in training, studying the patterns of a football match. They will establish musical patterns to mirror the action on the pitch thus creating a music-enhanced experience transcending the pure joy of a good football match.

Previous events have taken place in Johannesburg in 2006 and in Sao Paulo and Santiago de Chile in 2014.

From Russia with Love at Platform is a UK premiere.
